Soul Fragmentation

When we experience stressful situations or traumas, our brains instinctively store these events or traumas in the subconscious, allowing us to continue with daily life with little to no conscious awareness of them.

When experiencing stress again, the mind evaluates the situation and responds using patterns established by previous experiences. These responses may not always reflect an individual's current self-perception.

These fragmentations align with the survival reactions from the nervous system called “fight, flight, freeze or fawn”.

Let’s look at an example of this playing out:

Imagine a woman named Emily, who is normally calm, thoughtful and well-spoken. She’s in a meeting at work when her boss unexpectedly criticizes her performance in front of others.

Emily begins to feel her heart rate spiking, her muscles tense up, she starts breathing shallowly, and her mind starts racing.

Suddenly, Emily begins to feel the physical sensations. She feels flushed in the cheeks, her hands begin to tremble, and before she can think clearly, she snaps back defensively or shuts down completely, may even say something sharp, or could possibly walk out abruptly – acting totally out of character.

Her nervous system perceived a threat to her social standing and safety, even though she wasn’t in any physical danger. The emotional brain (amygdala) hijacked her logical thinking (prefrontal cortex), and her reaction became instinctual and not rational.

Once she calms down, she might think: “Why did I say that? That was not me.” But in that moment, her body wasn’t trying to be “herself” – it was trying to protect her.
